Conflict Resolution Month

Conflict Resolution Day was designated by the Association of Conflict Resolution in 2005 in order to increase public awareness about conflict resolution and its many benefits.
In Colorado we celebrate the entire month of October rather than a day.

Workshop: Solving Unsolvable Conflicts: Conflict Management Using Polarity Thinking
Time & Place:

9:00 AM: To Be Announced

City/Town: Boulder, CO

Often agreements do not stick, are not sustainable, and can even make the situation worse because the conflict is diagnosed in ways that do not reflect the interdependence of the issues. Polarity thinking is a lense that frames issues in interdependent pairs, e.g., stability AND change, self AND other, task AND relationship, and a tool that allows all parties to understand their interests will be supported through visible action steps. Polarity Thinking helps prevent polarization.

Workshop: Conflict Coaching: A Three-Day Basic Training
Time & Place:

La Quinta Motel, 902 Dillon Rd., Louisville (off the Louisville/Superior exit from the Boulder Turnpike)

City/Town: Louisville, CO
Description: Conflict coaching is defined as a set of skills and strategies used to support peoples’ ability to engage in, manage, or productively resolve conflict. In this process, the conflict coach works one-on-one with a coachee experiencing conflict with another person. Conflict coaching enables the coachee to talk about the conflict with a neutral third party (the conflict coach), consider options for managing the conflict, and design an approach to working out the conflict with the other person. Conflict coaching can be used as a stand-alone process, or can be practiced with each of the parties in separate meetings during mediation. I have discovered that conflict coaching is a powerful vehicle for clients to develop insights about difficult conflict situations that they might be in, which can lead to meaningful change.

TRAINING OBJECTIVES: As a result of this training, participants will:

Define conflict coaching and distinguish it from other processes
Review, observe and practice conflict coaching process (with trained coaches)
Refine listening and questioning skills
Be prepared to coach clients in communication skills
Manage psychological dynamics, while remaining true to the role of conflict coach
Discuss the settings in which conflict coaching can be offered
Appreciate the ethics of a conflict coach

The Little Book of Conflict Transformation by John Paul Lederach

Summary courtesy of http://www.restorativejustice.org
Lederach, John Paul (2003). The little book of conflict transformation. Intercourse, PA: Good Books.

John Paul Lederach presents his approach to conflict, which has evolved over 15 years of research, teaching and practice. Conflict transformation understands peace in conjunction with justice. Transformative processes give more attention to constructive change than might be considered under mere conflict resolution, especially when ongoing relationships are involved. The lens of conflict transformation views not only the immediate situation, but also looks at the underlying patterns and context, and seeks a conceptual framework for the situation. It addresses change on four levels, the personal, relational, structural and cultural. Lederach’s approach to change builds on process structures, and he suggests several practices for applying the conflict transformation paradigm.

Reading Guide

Join others and watch INVICTUS!

Discuss the strategies of Nelson Mandela and how we might adapt them in our daily lives.

Directed by Clint Eastwood, Invictus (2009) stars Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon. The story is based on the John Carlin book Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Changed a Nation.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela; born 18 July 1918, served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, and was the first South African president to be elected in a fully representative democratic election. Before his presidency, Mandela was an anti-apartheid activist, and the leader of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC). In 1962 he was arrested and convicted of sabotage and other charges, and sentenced to life in prison. Mandela served 27 years, spending many of these years on Robben Island. Following his release on 11 February 1990, Mandela led his party in the negotiations that led to multi-racial democracy in 1994. As president from 1994 to 1999, he frequently gave priority to reconciliation. Mandela has received more than 250 awards over four decades, including the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize.

Viewing this film in groups and discussing the choices people made in various situations will promote attention to challenging and productive strategies for working with others. The Conflict Resolution Month's Viewers Guide will soon be available on line.

It is one of the oldest organizations in North America working to build peaceful communities through their diverse programs. This includes bringing together young Americans, Palestinians and Israeli’s through Building Bridges for Peace, exposing local high school students to peace-building programs through our Denver P.E.A.C.E. program and engaging alumni through Interns for Peace.

The Hurt by Teddi Doleski - Statewide reading campaign, with reading guide (click here)

The Hurt was chosen for the Colorado Conflict Resolution Month, October 2009, statewide reading campaign because of its universal message and straight forward presentation.  All ages, school mates, business colleagues and family members can understand the feeling of being overcome by the hurts that happen in our everyday lives.  Many of us do not know where to begin to make the hurt go away.

This book, though it looks like a child's book, carries a message for all ages about inviting others to listen and help the hurt go away. The Hurt encourages us to address our problems, talk with the people who have hurt us and remember that our words and actions can so easily hurt others.

The University of Colorado at Boulder will present The "Un-Debate" Exploring Collaborative Problem Solving Discussions Amongst Congressional Candidates

This free event begins at 7 PMin the Wittemyer Courtroom at the Wolf LawBuilding, University of Colorado at Boulder Campus

Participants: Jared Polis, Scott Starin and, Bill Hammons, (Candidates For United StatesHouse of Representatives, 2nd District), and Mary Margaret Golten, Facilitator, Partner, CDR Associates

Discussants: Hank Brown, Former US Senator and CU President and currently Quigg and Virginia S. Newton Endowed Chair in Leadership at the University of Colorado at Boulder; Rollie Heath, Candidate Colorado Senate 18th District; Stan Deetz, Professor of Communication and Director of Peace and Conflict Studies; Susan Clark, Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for Advanced Research in the Social Science

The Rationale: The world of the future will likely be filled with greater conflict arising from world wide interdependence coupled with increased competition for resources, diminishing fresh water supplies, and the various consequences of global climate change. How governance and decision making are handled in this context is very important. Research on conflict, creativity, and collaboration shows that different ways of talking with each other increase-or decrease-the likelihood of mutually satisfying decisions.

Contemporary political processes are filled with argumentative and adversarial talk manifest as the "debate" in the election process and partisanship in governance. Neither, in many cases, serves the nation well, especially when high conflict issues exist. And, unfortunately, few models exist for different, more productive ways of talking in the election campaign or governance. Arguably, elected officials not only should have good positions on issues but should be able to engage with others who have different ideas and perspectives, to reach creative decisions. Voters should be able to see how good political candidates are at reaching decisions with others who are different, as well as how well they debate and express their positions.

The un-debate Plan: The plan is best conceived as a type of working experiment. Students will select three national problems or issues for the content focus of the discussion. The goal of the "un-debate" process is to identify shared interests and mutual outcomes rather than expressing preexisting positions.

To achieve this goal, each candidate will be asked to talk for five minutes on the first problem or issue, focusing on his key interests or concerns. The facilitator will ask questions to clarify the candidate's interests and to explore underlying concerns that often remain hidden by the candidate's framing of the issues. The facilitation process will then help to identify overlapping interests and desired outcomes, as well as to clarify key differences. Finally, the facilitator will aid the candidates in discovering alternative, mutually supportable ways that these interests and outcomes can be achieved. Discussion of subsequent issues will repeat the process.

For example, students might identify dependency on foreign oil as a problem and the candidates might take different positions on additional drilling in the US. Disclosed information might include where and how much oil exists and the speed and different social/ecological/economic costs of its availability. Surfaced shared goals might include independence of US foreign policy, reduction of balance of trade deficit, job creation, and improved health of the US economy. Each of these might be better achieved through options outside or beyond the initial positions taken by each candidate.

Through this process, a different kind of political discussion will be modeled that has a greater possibility to promote mutual cooperation and creative decisions. The discussion following the "un-debate" will explore how well this form of talk helped achieve such things as avoiding impasse, polarizing groups, and frustrating compromises, and whether it helped increase the likelihood of "third way," creative decisions.
